Question about Defy Dock stain: I have a doc which I stained with Armstrong Clark 4-5 years ago. Was thinking about restaining with Defy Marine. Will that work, or am I stuck with oil base at this point.
As long as you prep with the Restore A Deck Stripper and Brightener Kit, you can switch to the Defy stains.

I’m up near Toronto Canada. I have a cedar deck that has never been stained. What’s best for a semi transparent stain that is shippable to Canada? Thanks
I bought a gallon each of A-1 and RAD Strip from you guys for my red brick paver patio. Should I try the A-1 first or only try the stripper? It’s probably been 4+ years since it was sealed.
Hello, is there a paver sealer that I can use around the pool area that will give a gloss appearance without darkening the pavers ? I previously used SS25 on my driveway pavers but it darkened the look of the pavers. TY..
No, gloss sealers will also darken like a wet look.

Trying to decide between TWP or Armstrong Clark for my Ipe deck that is fairly new (1 year old). It gets a lot of sun exposure, about 6-8 hours a day. We are in Northern California. What are the pros and cons for both? Also, RAD is recommended to do first, wait a few days, then apply TWP or AC, right?
Thanks
TWP is not suggested for IPE while the 3 colors of AC are. Prep with RAD first.

I applied your super seal 30 gloss in early June. The surface of my formed concrete patio was power washed twice, once in late April and once the day before I applied the sealer. I’ve used your product many times in the past, but this year it dried with lots of bubbles, some of which were so large that they popped when stepped upon. The surface is also tacky to the touch such that when walking on it with tennis shoes you can hear and feel the tackiness. I’m wondering a) what I did wrong or b) what is wrong with the current product.
Is there a solution to this situation?
Hi guys, I usually like to do some spot treatment pre-work with xylene when I seal every year – like getting rid of those bubbles that show up. I’ve had a tough time finding xylene this year – big box retailers don’t sell it and even online availability seems to be spotty. Have they scaled back production for some reason? Perhaps safety issues? Is there an alternative product I could/should use?
Thanks,
Kyle
Hello. Our deck was previously stained using Cabot oil-based semi-solid. It formed a film that peeled and cracked despite our best prep work and we are trying to avoid having that happen again. Do the Armstrong-Clark semi-solid stains form a film or should we go with the semi-transparent?
No, the AC semi-solid stain are penetrating. Make sure to remove the Cabot stain first.

Hi! I noticed when I checked out that I was not charged tax… then I read some comments about various states that certain products are not permitted to be sold to. I did not know there were restrictions before I ordered and I’m not sure if my state is on that list (I am in NY). Hoping it’s allowed… but if not, Is that possibly why tax was not charged? And, if it is not permitted, will I be offered a refund or an alternative product since it cannot ship to me? Thanks so much!

Good Morning….planning to buy Woodrich TimberOil deck stain which seems to be offered in Amaretto…but I don’t see that color sample. Can you please send me a pic? Thank you!
Good morning – I ordered a sample of the superseal 30 (clear) and would like to also try the brown tint. Is it possible to get a sample of that. The dropdown to choose the sample doesn’t seem to have the option to select the brown tint.
We just tested it and it worked with no issues. We also have had no one else have a problem so it would be locally related to your computer or browser. Is they pop up for PayPal coming after you click PayPal? If not, your browser is blocking pop-ups.

Looking for the best water based sealer for a 60 yr. old brick exterior. Recently pointed, the brick has no weather protection.
Thanks,
Don
We have a mold issue with part of our deck. Just wondering what kind of solution you recommend and do you have reputable construction contractors. This stuff is blotchy-looking and appears on an area of the deck that is shaded but not covered. The deck is covered with a solid stain(sic). The rest is covered during 6-7months with a “canvas” commercial-type covering. The last contractor did not do a very nice job two years ago. I have read many articles about your business and how it came into existence. Your ideas please. You sound like my kind of people!
We do not offer construction services. As for the mildew, it may be prevented for a time but you would have to redo the current coating and then add a mildew-preventer after to see if that will help.

Looking for a product that will darken my stamped concrete, have used your super seal 30. However, I am simply looking to darken the concrete, with little or no shine if necessary..
If you have already used the SS30 on the same surface, you cannot undull it. No matter what, the shine will still be there when resealed unless you strip. If you strip it off or a different surface with no prior coatings, you would want this: https://www.opwdecks.com/wet-look-no-gloss.htm

What type of finish should I use on red grandis porch columns?
Sorry but no, it is not possible to strip indoors. You need a pressure washer to remove after applying the strippers and that cannot be done indoors

I am installing a cedar fence in a partially shaded area around a backyard urban garden in Brooklyn, NY. I want the wood to weather to gray but have read about mildew and blackening on untreated cedar. Even semi-transparent stains seem like paint, which I don’t want. Is there a durable oil-based sealer that will allow for more or less uniform greying?
I have a deck that was treated with Defy semi transparent marine sealer that has now developed some black staining in the grain of the pressure treated wood. How best to restore this wood before resealing?
Sorry but no, we do not have sealers that will work for the rocks.

I applied SB-7000 on my pavers in January of 2021. It is now three years later and I would like to re-apply a sealer. Can I apply SB-7700 directly over SB-7000 without stripping the SB-7000?
A call to SB Technical Support revealed that SB-7700 *is* SB-7000 with a fungicide additive! If the SB-7000 coating on my pavers has lost its hydrophilic (water resistant) properties (as happens with 3-5 years of UV exposure), then I can apply SB-7700 over the SB-7000. If water still beads on the surface, then it can be stripped, or high-temperature (above 180ºF) pressure washed off.
I just want to shout out a big thank you for the recommendation of Armstrong Clark stain for my dock/deck. I did a 50/50 mix of Natural Oak and Driftwood Gray. Came out as a beautiful greige/taupe color and after two coats, really lets the woodgrain show through. (BTW, this is an 11 year old pressure treated deck that has never been stained, only power washed every few years).
This year, I power washed, Cleaned and Brightened, then two coats of stain…

Hi there. We currently live in southern Indiana and purchased Armstrong semi-transparent cedar stain to stain our PT pine deck. We noticed that it is made from linseed oil. When we used linseed oil in the past while in NM (many years ago to stain our deck- wasn’t Armstrong), we noticed darkened “charred areas” where there were slightly recessed screws or other imperfections, scratches, knots, etc- with this past finish. Will this happen w/ our Armstrong semi-transparent cedar stain if we apply per the directions as there again are imperfections in the deck including knots, scratches, etc. as well as some recessed screws?
Thank you! I was concerned that the linseed oil caused a “smoldering event” as there were areas that were significantly darker that did not have metal associated w/ it, ie. scratches, imperfections in the wood, etc. So you have not had issues like I have described in your business?
No, that is not possible. It is rust or something else, not the stain or linseed oil that would cause this.

Hello, can you please recommend a sealer for a concrete paver patio surrounding our swimming pool. Im looking for something that is non slip, has joint stabilizing properties, and either a matte or semi gloss finish.
We sealed the area 2 years ago with a “solvent based top coat matte finish sealer” as per the installer, but the specific brand of sealer is unknown.
I’m planning to order SuperSeal 30 from you to seal the exposed aggregate around our pool (we’ve used it before with great results). I also need to seal our patios and walkways, which are slate/fieldstone with cement mortar for grouting and clay bricks as trim. I’ve used PolySeal EZ in the past on the patios with so-so results (sealed well but did get a little hazy in spots). What product do you recommend for our patios? Thanks in advance for the advice.
Thank you for the prompt reply. That makes sense. So would you recommend a sealer like Super Seal Matte or is there a better product you would recommend for my application?
Sorry, I should have specified that earlier. The sealer was applied 3 years ago. I intend to pressure wash and strip the patios before applying anything new. Since wet look or enhancing sealers won’t work, what type of protectant/product do you recommend for this type of mixed surface (flagstone/mortar/brick)?
Make sure you actually strip if off as pressure washing alone will not remove the old sealer. For the sealer, you will need a penetrating sealer like this: https://www.opwdecks.com/m-non-gloss.htm

I’m dyin’ here! I’ve been researching endlessly to find the optimal sealer for my new 1900 sq ft concrete paver driveway and patio here in Florida and just can’t seem to. I really need your expert recommendation. Here’s what I (think I) want:
– Water-based
– Good color enhancement /wet look
– Low gloss
– Joint stabilizer? (the joints are only @1/8″ except along walls)
– Great UV and water protection (it’a Florida)
– Breathable (so no efflorescence problems)
– Won’t create tire marks
Thank you in advance for your help!
I have a composite deck which was rained/painted by previous owners. Is there any product that will adhere to composite decks? I also have cedar trim and steps on this deck. Any recommendations for priming and finishing that surface?
You cannot stain over a paint so we do not have anything that would work for you.

Im using rad to strip old sealer off stamped concrete. I used a orbital pressure sprayer to clean, and pressure wash for final clean up. I got some blotching of rad or will not come off concrete whats the deal? do i add more rad over the old rad?
We live in the Canadian Rockies, get lots of snow in the winter and lots of sun in summer. Our deck is pressure treated pine, 288sq ft and 9 years old. Previously stained with Thompsons Semi Transparent Stain which is almost completely off in one year. I want to strip and brighten it before applying a good semi transparent stain. TWP 200 is too much stain for our needs. Can you recommend another stain that I should order? Thanks!
Shipping cats are actual UPS shipping costs for the product(s) weight and are based on shipping to your zip or postal code. You would have to ask UPS why they charge what they do. Thanks

I have a 7 year timber Tex deck
the boards are vinyl capped composite
when wet they look great like new but when the deck is dry it’s very dull looking
I have cleaned the deck several times with dawn soap and water scribed it with a brush and hosed off with a hose and also tried a pressure washer
I also tried Timbertex very expensive deck cleaner filling there directions
but still looks dull without being wet
tje desk is a cedar color
Timbertex does not have answers
do you have a product that would bring back the shine that will work with a vinyl capped composite deck or am I out of luck and have to deck with new boards
my friend has a 5 year old Trex deck with no dullnesses
also my neck like most vinyl caped deck is very hot in the sun
if you have a product that will
work for the dullnesses would it reflect some sunlight and make the deck cooler?
thank you for your time and your comments
No, the SS30 is too thick to be sprayed with a pump sprayer.

My 23 year old mahogany deck has been stained wit Ac for 15 years it has been sanded and power washed many times including this year, I am ready to order stain but it looks uneven, should I go with a semi solid or will the semi transparent in mahogany cover properly, it looks a bit blotchey
No, semi-solids will not work on Mahogany wood. You might need to prep differently. Strip and brighten to even it out.

I have a large wooden deck that needs work. I would like to use a semitransparent Cedar or Redwood stain followed by a sealer. What products should I be looking at?
Thanks,
Paul
Unfortunately, we do not know the issue with your clay pavers. It looks to be leaching something out but it could be many things and there is not one cleaner that will work in all scenarios.
I actually have two questions – (1) We bought a teak table and chairs. It is used but never exposed to direct light so it looks new. I saw one company used Messmers UV Plus in Natural to re-do all their teak furniture for customers. Is that a good product for me to use? Would I need to put my table and chairs out in the sun for a couple of weeks to let the grains “open up” or can I just let them stay out a couple days? I don’t want them turning gray. (2) Would this same product work on some well used cypress rocking chairs? Thank you so much for answering my questions. LaDonna
This teak table and chairs is 10 years old, just never used much and never in direct sunlight. Do I still need to let it “weather”? I’m mainly wanting a UV protector. What are you recommending the TWP 1500 for – the cypress or the teak. My cypress rockers are 10 years old, too.

I applied SB-7000 on my pavers in January of 2021. It is now three years later and I would like to re-apply a sealer. Can I apply SB-7700 directly over SB-7000 without stripping the SB-7000?
Yes.
EDIT – If water still beads on the surface, then the SB-7000 *should* be stripped, or high-temperature (above 180ºF) pressure washed off.
Darken areas around screws are not from a deck stain or linseed oil, it is from the screws rusting.

I’ve used PolySeal EZ in the past on the patios with so-so results (sealed well but did get a little hazy in spots). What product do you recommend for our patios? Thanks in advance for the advice.
You cannot use a wet look or shiny sealer on flagstone as it dries very blotchy.
Thank you for the prompt reply. That makes sense. So would you recommend a sealer like Super Seal Matte or is there a better product you would recommend for my application?
You cannot use any wet look or enhancing sealers. Also, you would have to strip off the old coating first.

Sorry but we do not understand what you are asking. Pics would help as well.
I wanted to use a solid stain in white on 8 month pt railing to match the trim on my house. It sounds like you don’t recommend a solid stain?
You can use a solid stain for verticals and semi-transparent for the floors. Looks great. See this:

I have a large wooden deck that needs work. I would like to use a semitransparent Cedar or Redwood stain followed by a sealer. What products should I be looking at?
Thanks,
Paul
TWP 1500 Series. Make sure to prep first. You cannot top coat over a deck stain with a sealer. It will peel if you do.

Unfortunately, we do not know the issue with your clay pavers. It looks to be leaching something out but it could be many things and there is not one cleaner that will work in all scenarios.
Is high gloss slippery?
Typically no but do not over-apply.
LaDonna
You cannot stain new wood right away. Needs to weather for 3-4 months and then prepped:

As for the best stain to use, try TWP 1500 Series:

This teak table and chairs is 10 years old, just never used much and never in direct sunlight. Do I still need to let it “weather”? I’m mainly wanting a UV protector. What are you recommending the TWP 1500 for – the cypress or the teak. My cypress rockers are 10 years old, too.
Sorry, no you can just prep and then stain. Use the TWP for both wood types.
is two coat application required how much area does one gal cover
That varies based on the stain brand and type of stain.
