New! Choice of Two 2.5 Gallon (total of 5 gallons) or One 2.5-Gallon container for easier use and storage.
DEFY Marine Seal is suitable for use on all types of wooden docking materials, providing extreme durability against the harmful effects of exposure to both fresh and salt water. DEFY Marine Seal has been specially formulated using state of the art nano-particle technology to provide superior resistance against ultraviolet color fade and mold and mildew growth. New cedar docks should be cleaned as quickly as possible to avoid damage from the sun and rain. Let oil-rich woods such as mahogany weather 6 months prior to application. New pressure treated lumber typically contains a high degree of moisture and should be allowed to weather for 6-12 months prior to staining.
* Environmentally Friendly for “Clean Marinas”
* Resists Mildew/Fungus Growth
* Rapid Dry Time
* 250 VOC Compliant
To achieve optimum results, DEFY Marine Seal should not be applied over previously stained surfaces, painted surfaces or varnished surfaces. When staining composite lumber and exotic hardwoods, allow materials to weather for no less than 12 months. Prior to staining, clean all surfaces with DEFY Marine Seal Wood Dock Cleaner per label instructions. For all composite wood and exotic hardwoods, apply only one coat of stain. Note: The “wet” color of DEFY Marine Seal has a cloudy/milky appearance but will dry to a beautiful, semi-transparent finish.

I’ve used your product on my dock in the Annapolis area for the past 10 years, it works well and the ability to add stain within 15-20 minutes before the first coat dries is a real bonus. My question, I last stained @ 4 yrs ago, using the 5 gal bucket of natural pine. I have kept the unused stain in the original bucket and sealed. I was thinking of using it on a 10 x 10 deck on our property. Is there a shelf life? Do you recommending using Defy if its the remainder of an older use application?
Shelf life after being opened is 12 months. We would not suggest using it after 5 years.
We are about to have a new dock installed with pressure treated pine decking. The builder is telling us that PT wood he is sourcing now is noted to be finished immediately. Do I need to do any prep to the new wood before using Defy Marine Stain on it? The lake we’re on in the Finger Lakes is an aquifer and we draw our water from it as well, so I’m very uncomfortable using cleaners that would rinse off into the lake.
Hi is incorrect. It is not about the wood but the stain or coating brand that you use. Defy marine needs 3+ months of weathering and then prep with the Defy Cleaner and Defy Brighener before staining. Teh prep products are eco-friendly.
hi … I installed a cedar dock last summer, removed it in late fall and stored the panels in he basement this winter. I want to treat the dock before putting it bak in the lake. What do you recommend to maintain the cedar look while protecting the wood? Does more color mean better protection? … Dan
You have to prep first. Use these kits: https://www.opwdecks.com/best-selling-cleaner.htm
Then use the Defy Marine Stain in any color you would like.
It says, “Two 2.5 Gallon (total of 5 gallons) or One 2.5-Gallon container.” Based on the selections available, I’m guessing it should say, “Two 2.5 Gallon (total of 5 gallons) or One 5-Gallon container,” correct? So, if I select 2.5 Gallon and I choose a quantity of 1, is that price for a pack of Two 2.5 gallon containers?
No, the wording is correct. You have two size options. One for Two 2.5 Gallon (total of 5 gallons) for $229.24 or One 2.5-Gallon container for $149.24.
OK, so the 5-gallon buckets are no longer available?
Correct. It is now 2 of the 2.5-gallons.
Hello I am uo in Canada, I need to build new cedar dock boards on a freshwater lake. Was wondering if I should seal them to get longer life out of them. What would you recommend and should cedar be treated right away or does it need to weather for 6 months also. Please advise.
Let it weather until spring and then clean and brighten for prep prior to applying.
We live on a small lake in central Ohio. We built a new dock and decking from extreme weather PTW at the end of March this year. I was planning on cleaning and staining it at the end of September/early October this Fall. Is 6 months enough for it to weather? I hesitate to wait until Spring because it is often wet and then summer is so humid.
If I order shortly, how long does it take to arrive? I estimate I will need three 2.5 gal. containers of the Defy Marine stain plus 2 containers of the Defy Marine cleaner.
Yes, you can stain it now. You need the Defy Brightener as well. About 2-4 days to Ohio.
I need Defy Brightener as well as Defy Marine Cleaner?
Correct.
I have a wooden dock in the St. John River at Pancake Hill Carter’s Point New Brunswick Canada that is one year old and not previously treated. It is removed seasonally and thus would be in the St. John River 6 months. How do I obtain your product to treat it. How many coatings and How frequently must it be treated. There is saltwater influence including tidal from the Bay of Fundy at Carter’s Point
You can buy directly from the website and shave it shipped there. One coat, redo every couple of years.
Do you have to reapply Defy on a freshwater dock every year. if not, how long does it typically last in the Southern US.
Every 2 years is normal.
Hi, I have a 9-mth old deck which I stained with Thomson’s from Lowes and it appears to not be able to withstand the NorCal coast moisture and sun beating. Would you suggest for me to re-stain with Defy Marine, Defy Extreme or Cabot?
Use the Defy Extreme. Remove the Thompsons first.
26 years of deck cleaning and staining experience in Maryland . I moved to Murrells Inlet SC to retire and I want to help my friend start a business washing and staining docks and piers . I found your product in my search for a marine grade semi-transparent stain that can handle the salt water and UV sun in this area . Wash , brighten and apply stain seems to be the procedure here as well . What else can you recommend for this start up business ?
That is all you would need as far as materials from our end unless there is an old semi-transparent coating that needs to be removed with our Defy Stain Stripper.
We stained our pier maybe 5 years or more with just Thompson seal from Lowe’s right after it was pressure washed. It has been stained only twice since it was built, around 1995 with salt treated lumber from our local H & B Lumber here in Statesville, NC. Really no issues with it, just wanting to protect it a little better and will use whatever you recommend!
The Defy Marine Stain is the best product for this.
Please advise the best deck stain for me. Thinking of doing a light sanding and using semi transparent oil based stain. Would it be better for me to use a marine paint for better protection? also I heard there is something you can put on a deck instead of doing sanding before staining? Thank you, Mark
Deck Location State: New York
Full Sun, Partial Shade, Full Shade: Full Sun
Wood Type: Cedar around 30 years old
Mold or Mildew Issues: No
Reason for Previous Stain Failure: Faded and mostly gone. Done poorly by a hired contractor.
Previous Stain Brand and Type of stain (Solid, Semi-transparent, Transparent, etc): Semi Transparent
You do not need a dock stain for this. Try the Defy Extreme Stain or the TWP 1500 series.
What do you recommend for application? I see DEFY makes a push brush head that is 11” wide but I cannot find this product on your site.
Use a stain pad: https://www.opwdecks.com/brushes-stain-pads.htm
when applying clear wood preservative does it need space to breathe
Not sure what you mean by “space”?
Just purchased Defy cleaner and marine sealer/stain from you for use on wood dock constructed on fresh water lake in October 2016 with pressure treated wood.. Has enough time elapsed to now clean/stain/seal? With evening temps in upper 40’s and day temps in upper 50s to 60’s can I apply or should i wait until spring?. Finally, should i use brush, roller or sprayer to apply? If roller-what type.. Thank you
Since it has been a year, you are ready to prep and stain. You can do now in these temps. Use a deck stain pad for applying.
Can I use the Defy Extreme Stain for a redwood deck at the beach?
Yes you can.
Sorry but no.
once frozen can the stain be reconstituted?
For two coats, about 500 sq. feet. For one coat, about 750 sq. feet for the 5 gallon.
Howdy, How many square feet will a 5-gallon bucket cover? Thanks!
Tom,
This would be the correct product for this.
I have a 12 year old PT wood dock over salt water. Which product do you recommend to refinish it?
I would use the Defy Extreme Stain for a pool deck.
would the defy marine sealer work well on my pressure treated swimming pool deck? If so, about how long will it last? Would there be a better product than this for my deck?
I would stay with Defy Hardwood Stain for IPE.
I used Defy Hardwood stain on a dock with IPE wood, and it did well. It’s time for a redo. Should I continue to use the Hardwood stain, or switch to this Marine stain?
Yes you can apply while over water.
Can I apply this while my dock is in the water? I would not be able to contain all of the spillage.
Regards,
Kirk
Typically every 2-3 years on a horizontal surface. You can clean and recoat when needed as long as it is the same product.
It is water-based. Shipping to Maryland is 3-5 business days.
Return policy is at the bottom of the page.
Thanks
Also, how many years until I have to re-do the sealer? The description says not to apply this over previously stained surfaces (which mine is not at this point) but what happens in x number of years when I need to re-power wash and re-sealer my dock and stairs–can I use this product again?
Is this marine grade sealer oil-based? Also is it in stock and how long is shop time to Maryland for 4 5-gallon containers? What is your return policy if I only use 3 of the 4 containers?
Oh okay perfect. Thanks for all of your help yesterday and today.
The “tints” act as your UV blocker, prolonging the graying effect. The Natural Pine is very lightly tinted. It will enhance the color similar to as if the wood was wet with water.
I really just wanted a clear sealer for my pressure-treated dock not a stain?
5 gallon pails ship free. Shipping time to Seattle takes about 5-6 business days.
-Extremely Low VOC’s
-No hazardous ingredients
-Defy Stains are Green Friendly by Masters Paint Institute
I need to get at lease 10 gallons of Defy marine seal wood shipped to Seattle Washington but i need to know how much the shipping cost me and how long takes to get them
What makes it environmentally friendly then? The description doesn’t specifically say it won’t harm anything if dripped in the water?
No it is not EPA approved. To have a wood stain EPA approved the manufacturer needs to spend about $20,000 for every color to be tested and registered.
Is this product EPA approved for use on docks over water?
Not at all. Defy Marine Seal was designed for “Clean Marinas”. They are also “green friendly” products.
Are there any EPA or Clean Marina issues with Defy Marine Seal
