Which particular brand of deck stain you use can certainly affect the overall outcome of your deck staining results. Appearance, durability, and longevity are all concerns of any deck stain brand.
There are many quality deck stain brands to choose for your wood deck. Remember that the number one reason any deck stain brand will fail prematurely results from incorrect wood prep. No matter the deck stain brand, improper cleaning and prepping prior to a stain application causes risk to the stain’s overall performance. Always clean and prep the wood correctly before choosing a brand of deck stain.
Most deck owners will make a decision on deck stain brands by appearance and other factors. It is necessary to decide between oil and water based stains. Also the different opacity options of stain brands. Not all deck stain brands will have the same benefits but for the most part, they all do a good job of giving the consumer some options.
Most deck owners prefer deck stain brands that have been around for awhile and have built some trust and loyalty.
Some popular quality deck stain brands
- Armstrong Clark
- Cabot
- Defy
- Messmers
- Penofiin
- TWP Stain
There are certainly other deck stain brands to choose from but these listed above have the best overall ratings. Be cautious of where you purchase any deck stain brand. Deck stain brands purchased from reputable stain dealers or sealer stores will give you better results and reliability. Choose your deck stain brand by comparing it with others based on particular factors like appearance, ease of application, durability, cost, and overall performance and longevity.
Is Cabot Deck Correct a good choice? I’ve seen a few negative reviews.
No, it is a very poor stain. Use this: https://www.opwdecks.com/armstrong-clark-stain.htm
Hi, I have used your Armstrong Clark semi-trans cedar stain on my fir deck for the past three years, and although it has held up quite well, after three applications the color of the deck is now uniformly darker than I would like it to be. Would you now recommend using a transparent natural tone stain on my next application so my deck won’t get any darker?
No, best would be to strip and brighten for prep: https://www.opwdecks.com/restore-a-deck-stain-stripper.htm
Hi. I am a new customer at your website. I’m glad I discovered you.
I am going to refinish my deck out front and have chosen Restore-A-Deck RAD cleaner, stripper and brightener, including the two additives for the stripper. I have a pressure washer to help with the application.
I don’t know what type of wood the deck is made of but I’d like to stain it redwood.
What do you recommend for a stain and do I need a sealer afterwards?
Not sure yet how many square feet I have but after measuring, I will adjust my shopping cart to handle it.

No photos. As for the stain, use Armstrong Clark: https://www.opwdecks.com/armstrong-clark-stain.htm
Does Armstrong Clark have a redwood stain and do I need a sealer afterwards
Thanks.

You can never apply a sealer over a deck stain. No need.
