I redid my deck in 2018 with TWP 1500 series 5 black walnut. I think the stain needs to be reapplied. What are my steps to do this. This is what my deck looks like today.
Use this kit for prep before reapplying: https://www.opwdecks.com/rad-300.htm
what is the wet on wet method again for applying second coat?
Apply second coat 20-40 minutes after the first coat.
Thanks! I have just one last question. After cleaning and brightening how long do I have to wait to stain?
48 hours
Most all of the stain that we applied 2years ago is worn off. Do I still need to use the defy stripper and brightened before restraining or can I just give it a light power wash?
You need to strip and brighten to remove all.
Just sanded off an old and flaky layer of Behr water-base semi transparent stain from our redwood deck. The stain is 4 years old. I’m concerned about the drips of old stain in between the deck boards which are difficult to sand. Should I use a stripper, continue to sand or ignore those areas? We plan to use TWP 1500 oil-base as the new stain.
Post a picture.
The old stain drips down in places. If I continue to sand, do you have a recommendation on getting in between the boards?
There is not a way to strip or sand between the boards.
We have put a new solid stain on a garage door and don’t like it can I remove and put back to natural wood?
You cannot strip it off. You would have to sand it off.
Thanks I appreciate your input looks like it’s back on the sander
cheers
I have semi transparent stain on my deck. It is peeling in some spots. I tried Restore A Deck stripper but it did nothing. How can I strip ,you deck?
Post a picture of what you are trying to remove and what is the brand and type of stain that is on there?
What is the best technique and materials to use on a ironwood deck to prep and refinish?
Power sand for removal of the previous stain. Once removed, use the Defy Hardwood Stain: https://www.opwdecks.com/defyhardwood.htm
I had an epic wind rain (8 inches in 36 straight hours) event remove my stain after 15 plus hours of curing. it is a new deck that sat for 4 months before cleaning and staining. it is cedar. do I need a stripper to remove what’s left or will a cleaner be enough?
Strip it to be safe.
Hi,
We used sickens on our new Ipe deck last year.
It wore uneavenly. Set of new untreated stairs weathered to grey over the winter. What do we use to prep and refinish. Right now it looks a mess. Tina
Please post a picture.
We stained our deck a year ago using Behr Deck Plus Transparent Waterproofing Wood Finish, guaranteed 2 years on decks. Could have been any number of issues (it was sunny that day, may have applied it too thickly etc) but we need to strip and redo because it’s flaking badly. What do you recommend, a chemical stripper or just sand it off? Tried some pressure washing but it didn’t take it off. Thanks!
Strip off what you can (some but not all will come off) and then sand the rest.
I used the stripper on my deck I purchased from you. Do you think I need to strip again or sand or just apply stain? I’m painting the rails white so that’s why I didn’t strip them.
What is the best outdoor temperature to use a wood stripper ?
60-80 degrees.
Three summers ago I applied the Armstrong-Clark Sierra Red stain to a previously-stained mahogany deck. I didn’t do my prep work very well, and the stain went on blotchy. I’m restaining this summer, and I’ve cleaned the deck with Restore-a-Deck Step #1 and #2 products. There’s still a lot of blotchiness left, and I’m afraid of restaining and adding to the uneven look. Should I start over and use the RAD stripper – or another product – to remove as much of the Armstrong-Clark stain as possible in the hopes that I’ll get a much more even “base layer” before restaining with the A-C Sierra Red? I’m hoping that if I do my prep sufficiently, I won’t have to do this again in 2-3 years. (By the way, I’m in the Pacific Northwest with lots of hot direct sun in summers.)
Yes, use the RAD Stripper/Brightener Kit.

They both work well for removing the TWP. Make sure to use the Wood Brightener after to neutralize/
Hi, We have a deck that was stained with Arbour Coat water based stain but which is peeling badly on the horizontal surfaces. Can I just scrape/sand or do I need to use a stain stripper then a neautralizer. If so, do I have to do that on vertical surfaces too. I’m especially wondering about the hundreds of spindles.
Thanks, Ken
Ken, the Arbor Coat is a nightmare of a product to remove. It cannot be stripped. You will need to sand to remove. You may just want to sand the horizontals, leaving the railings alone. Stain the floor with a semi-transparent stain like the TWP or Armstrong Clark. This is what we call a two-toned deck.

No, the RAD stripper is a more effective stain stripper.
pressure treated deck, previously treated with arbor coat from benjamin moore, peeling. What products recommended for prep and staining?
The Arbor coat will need to be sanded off as stain strippers will not remove it. Once removed fully from the deck, try Defy Extreme or Armstrong Clark.
Is there any product to assist with stripping Olympic Rescue It off of a deck? Less than 1 season and it flakes off.
The Olympic Rescue-It is a filming deck resurface coatings. Stain Strippers will not remove it. It will need to be sanded off.
Is there any product to assist with stripping Olympic Rescue It off of a deck? Less than 1 season and it flakes off.
The Restore A Deck Stain Stripper will easily remove when needed.
I just purchase Messmers uv plus for hardwood from you. I know it’s a little early but what stripper works well with this product when it’s time to refinish? Thanks
Sorry but deck stain strippers will not work on veneer.
Sorry for the repeat. I forgot to add some details. Hope that helps.
I have a oak door that was stained the wrong color. it’s been sanded, but there are still some parts that are holding the color. Since the door is veneer, it can’t be sanded anymore. Would it help to try to strip at all? Or is that useless. If so, what’s the best stripper to use to keep the veneer intact? Defy or HD80? TY! What a wonderful forum.

What type of stain is it? Semi-trans, solid stain, etc? What brand? How many times applied?
I am trying to remove a stain from my deck that has build up over time what’s the best type of deck stripper to use.
We can sell this to homeowners. No issues.
I tried asking this on the product page but it got removed. I have a porch that was stained with a water based Permachink deck stain. I was interested in the HD80 considering what it costs for 3000 sf coverage but was wondering why you don’t recommend it for home owners? What would you recommend instead for diy? Thanks.
Yes you can walk in to buy 8am to 5pm Monday-Friday.
I am curious as to whether the product is available for purchase in-store in Bloomfield, MI. (Restore a deck stripper & brightener) We live just south of Monroe, MI & are afraid the roduct will not arrive by the weekend.
Thanks.
Sorry but it is not possible to strip this product. You will have to sand it completely off the wood.
I bought a house where the previous owner painted the deck with Olympic Rescue It. What should I use to remove it and start over? I am leaning toward HD80.
Yes you will need to strip. Coverage is accurate. Brighten the wood is needed after to neutralize.
I have a 600 sq ft deck that was treated with DEFY semi transparent stain 2 years ago. I was to lazy to re-stain it last year even though it look horrible. It is mostly worn off where the sun hits, however about 1/4 of it is under roof and still intact. I plan on using Olympic semi solid elite deck stain. What should I use to clean/ remove the old product? I have looked at the restore a deck stripper and brightener. Is that over kill or appropriate? If so does the stripper really cover 500-1000 sq ft? And the brightener is used to neutralize the stripper, right?
Thanks
Not made anymore. Closest would be the Restore A Deck Stain Stripper or Defy Stain Stripper.
Can I buy Stripex-L from you?
